Syllabus, Reassessment and Grading Policy
Welcome to Geometry!
Geometry is a branch of mathematics concerned with questions of shape, size, relative position of figures, and the properties of space. In this class, we will be using everything you learned in algebra to solve problems related to the physical universe. This class will not only test your ability to problem solve and think about math in a physical sense, but challenge your ability to become a critical thinker, and proactively engage in your education.
About the class:
This class is unique here at Carmen. It focuses on personalized learning, which means you will be taking ownership over your learning. I will not stand in front of the class and talk to you for 56 minutes a day. Instead, YOU will be in charge of your learning. Each semester, you will be learning how to use a series of skills to become proficient in Geometry. Your grades are based on learning these objectives. In order to accomplish this, you will be watching videos, followed by completing online practice, online games and an additional practice worksheet. You will then complete an online “Check for Understanding” (ungraded) on Edulastic to show what you know and receive feedback and get help if necessary. After comleting the tasks for every 2 or 3 standards, you will complete a formative assessment (graded). At the end of each unit, you will then have to complete summative for that unit.

In this class, you will be graded on individual standards, not tests. Your overall percentage on formative and summative assessments will not be a factor in grading; instead, your overall performance on individual standards will be the determining factor in your grade. In Powerschool, your grades will be a reflection of where you are on any given standard, and you will be able to use your scores on formatives to help you identify your strengths, as well as the areas you need to improve on. Formative scores of 7 or below show what standards you need to practice and study for. The grading scale I will be using is as follows:
Reassessment for summatives will work on a standard by standard basis. You will only reassess for the standards you did not do well on. You can use Powerschool to determine what standards you need to reassess on. Remember, a minimum score of 16 shows proficiency on a standard. You may reassess on these standards up to the last week before finals. You may reassess on up to 2 standards a day, up to a maximum score of 17.
In order to reassess, you must complete the following steps
- Have completed notes for the lesson
- Complete the homework associated with the lesson, and have a peer check you worksheet with the answer key provided online. That peer will then sign off on your worksheet
- Schedule a time when you will reasses
Materials needed for class:
- Geometry notebook
- Earbuds or headphones
- Calculator
- Planner (Schoolwide expectation)
- IR Book (Schoolwide expectation)
In this class, you will be graded on individual standards, not individual tests or quizzes. You will be expected to re-assess on summative assessments when necessary, with the understanding that your grade is never set in stone. You may reassess on any standard up to 3 times until two weeks before finals.
Grading Weights:
- Formative Assessments: 17.5%
- Summative Assessments: 32.5%
- Ability Assessment: 10%
- Mid Term: 10%
- Final Exam: 22.5%
- RRT: 7.5%
